Giving Thanks for Music

Imagine a world without music.  It’s impossible!  Music is so indelibly intertwined in our culture.  From movie soundtracks to sporting events, car radios to elevators, music is all around.  And, with all the different styles of music, there’s a little something for everyone!  But did you know that music benefits everyone, as well?

Music is one of just a few activities that activates nearly every region of the brain.  Numerous studies have shown that music promotes well-being, enhances learning, and improves quality of life just from listening to it.  Actively playing a musical instrument increases those benefits and provides many more.

The executive functioning skills used to learn an instrument generalize into every day life.  Determination, organization, discipline, attention to detail, and perseverance are all grown through the work of learning an instrument.

Music also provides a socially acceptable and appropriate way to cope with stress, anxiety, and other big emotions.  While playing, dancing, or singing to music, our bodies release endorphins that improve our overall mental state. In addition, participating in group music-making teaches valuable life skill of working with others towards a common goal.

With all the proven benefits of music, it is something we can truly be thankful for this holiday season.
